Military service

Members of the armed forces (AdA) are generally obliged to perform military service. Requests for postponement of military service will only be supported if there are significant disadvantages for the AdA, i.e. the studies would be extended due to military service. It is recommended that military service be completed whenever possible, as otherwise a large number of service days will accumulate at the end of the course. It should therefore be examined whether alternatives to complete postponement of service such as partial service, service interruptions or applying for individual days of leave are conceivable. This offers the possibility of completing at least part of the service obligation and thus reducing the backlog of service days to be performed.

Reasons for a postponement

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences will support a request for postponement for the following academic reasons:

  • Absences during the lecture period
  • Semester examinations
  • Final examinations
  • Writing the Master's thesis (9 months)
  • Internships & excursions

Applications for private reasons must be submitted independently.

Postponement requests

The application for deferment and the supplementary sheet to the application for deferment must be completed and sent by email to the Student Administration. The Student Administration forwards the application to the relevant cantonal military authority. AdA will receive the decision directly from this authority. It is possible to clearly mark the request for a deferment of service as"Request for partial service from ... to..." or "Request for interruption of service from ... until...". In the case of partial service, service is shortened (late arrival or early departure). An interruption of service can be requested if only a few days off are required in the middle of the service. Requests for postponement must be submitted at least 14 weeks before the start of the service or immediately in the event of unforeseeable reasons.

Vacation requests

A request for leave can also be submitted if there are only a few days of absence. The commander is responsible for leave requests. Requests for leave must be submitted to the commander at least 4 weeks before the start of the service or immediately in the event of unforeseeable reasons.
