Together with the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the three large faculties at the University of Basel. Its broad range of subjects extends from African Studies, Ancient Civilizations, History, Philosophy, Art and Media Studies and Social Sciences to Linguistics, Literature and Urban Studies. The manageable size of the individual degree programs and subject areas enables personal contact between students and lecturers and benefits a lively and challenging teaching environment.

At the same time, the networking of the diverse subjects represents an important potential for research. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is interested in teaching and researching history as well as dealing with current issues of the present and recent developments in the individual disciplines. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences focuses its educational mission on the needs of research and the professional world.

Students have the opportunity to combine their study program from the wide range of subjects, modules and courses according to their needs and interests.

Matriculated students

In the fall semester 2023, 2,881 people (students, PhD students) of the 13,452 students (incl. MAS) at the University of Basel were matriculated at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
