Office of the Dean of Research

Prof. Dr. Nicola Gess, Professor of German Literature, has been Dean of Research at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences since fall semester 2022.

The Dean of Research is responsible for research and career advancements. She heads the Doctoral Board and the Habilitation Committee, chairs the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GS-HSS) and coordinates the work of the doctoral programs.

The tasks of the Dean of Research include in particular

  • representing the faculty on the Research Committee and the Doctoral Committee,
  • monitoring activities at the doctoral and habilitation levels,
  • supervision of the GS-HSS,
  • supervision of the doctoral examinations,
  • the examination of applications from students and PhD students in relation to research activities,
  • the coordination of faculty measures for career advancements,
  • responsibility for the further development and quality assurance of doctoral training,
  • the funding, conceptual development and quality assurance of research as well as its material organization through links to regional, national and international funding programs.

Staff unit

The academic staff member supports the Dean of Research in the operational implementation of her business and is the contact person for all questions relating to the subjects of doctorates and research.
