Study without borders

Outgoing: Guest studies at another university

Studying for a semester or two at another university or abroad is not only a professional but also a great personal enrichment. We will actively support you if you want to embark on this adventure. You can find information on exchange programs and mobility support as well as advice on how to proceed on the University of Basel website and on the homepages of the departments.

Incoming: Visiting students from other universities

Visiting students from other universities who attend courses at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as part of an exchange program must register at the University's Student Administration Office and attend the desired courses. At the end of each semester, they will receive a transcript of records showing the credit points earned and serving as proof of their achievements at their home university.

Eucor – The European Campus

We would like to draw particular attention to Eucor – The European Campus, the transnational consortium of universities on the Upper Rhine in Basel, Freiburg, Strasbourg, Mulhouse/Colmar, and Karlsruhe. This allows you to use the academic programs, libraries, and other facilities at all participating universities. Travel expenses will be reimbursed for courses attended at a European Campus university during the semester. Further information is provided here.

Recognition of external academic achievements

If you have completed coursework as part of a guest study program at another university, you can apply for it to be recognized and transferred to your studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. To do so, submit the completed recognition form together with the certificates, transcripts, transcripts of records or transcripts to the Student Administration.

The teaching committee of the subject in which the coursework is to be recognized will assign the coursework to the modules of the subject/program. Academic achievements that are shown in ECTS credits are recognized 1:1. Coursework that is not shown in ECTS credits is credited or waived by means of an estimate of the workload by the responsible teaching committee in accordance with the credit point system of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The waiver is a reduction in the work to be completed within the subject/degree program or the complementary area. Credit points for courses cannot be split and credited in different modules. The faculty will inform you of the decision by means of a recognition decision. The credits credited appear on the academic progress summary, but not on the transcript of records. The latter only documents credits earned at the University of Basel
