In order to study at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, you must be enrolled at the University of Basel or be enrolled as an external student. The credit points ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) express the work and learning achievements of students. ECTS is a Europe-wide recognized system for the recognition, transfer and accumulation of academic achievements. This system is based on the workload that students must complete in order to achieve their study objectives. One credit point (CP) corresponds to a workload of 30 hours. As a rule, 30 CPs are earned per semester of full-time study. The basic idea behind the uniform "currency" ECTS is to promote student mobility between European universities. This is ensured by the mutual recognition (transfer) of ECTS credits.
At the University of Basel, students are required to register for all courses they wish to attend. This means that you must register for the courses in advance. If you do not register, you will not be able to take part in the performance assessments and therefore cannot earn any credit points. You will receive an information sheet on this before each semester.
You can register online via the Self Services web application. After the official enrolment deadline, enrolment is only possible upon request and for a fee of CHF 100. You can find all further information about course registration here.
The results of the performance assessments are recorded in the system by the lecturers responsible and forwarded to you by e-mail. The corresponding credit points will be shown on the next transcript of records.
The course directory contains the entire range of courses offered by the university. On the websites of the departments and subject areas you will find the courses filtered by subject or department.
The courses offered by the subjects at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences are divided into modules that follow subject-specific content considerations. The modules can be found in the respective curricula and guidelines.
At the beginning of your studies, read the study plans and guidelines for your subjects or degree program carefully. The study plan provides a clear overview of the coursework you need to complete in order to graduate successfully. The guidelines provide details on the subject and the coursework. Here you will also find information on the subject-specific student advisory service, which you can use for content-related and organizational questions. Further information can also be found on the departmental websites.
If you have completed coursework outside the University of Basel or outside the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as part of another degree program, e.g. at another university, you can apply for it to be transferred to your degree program. The prerequisite is that these academic achievements have not already been used for another degree. Students with such previous achievements will receive a recognition form from the Student Administration Office upon registration, which they must complete and submit to the Student Administration of the Faculty of Humanities, together with the necessary supporting documents. The documents are reviewed by the relevant teaching committees. Study achievements that are shown in ECTS credits are recognized 1:1. Students will be informed by the faculty about the recognition of their previous achievements. Recognition is granted with regard to a specific combination of subjects or a specific degree program. In the event of a change of subject/degree program, recognition must be applied for again.
