Study organization

In order to organize your studies efficiently, please refer to the study plans and guidelines and make use of the student advisory service.

Please note: The Bachelor's and Master's framework regulations of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences have been revised. Not all guidelines include the subsequent adjustments to the new framework regulations, which will come into effect on August 1, 2019. All guidelines dated before October 2018 have not yet been adapted. You can find out more about the details of the changes and the consequences for your personal studies here for the Bachelor's degree and here for the Master's degree.

Attending courses

At the University of Basel, students are required to register for all courses they wish to attend. This means that you must register for the courses in advance. If you do not register, you will not be able to take part in the performance assessments and therefore cannot earn any credit points. You will receive an information sheet on this before each semester.

You can register online via the Self Services web application. After the official enrolment deadline, enrolment is only possible upon request and for a fee of CHF 100. You can find all further information about course registration here.

The results of the performance assessments are recorded in the system by the lecturers responsible and forwarded to you by e-mail. The corresponding credit points will be shown on the next transcript of records.

Sickness, absence and/or postponement of examinations and deadlines

Sickness, postponement and absence from examinations are regulated in the regulations for the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (§20.ff Bachelor's regulations and §24.ff and §18.4 Master's regulations).

An application to postpone or cancel performance assessments must be submitted in writing to the office responsible for organizing the examination at least two weeks before the examination date if there are valid reasons. The reasons must be supported by a medical certificate, for example. If you are unable to attend at short notice for health reasons, a medical certificate must be submitted to the responsible office immediately or by the next possible date.

The offices responsible for organizing the performance reviews are:
Bachelor's examination administration: bapruefungen-philhist@unibas.ch
Master's examination administration: masterpruefungen-philhist@unibas.ch
Master's thesis administration: masterarbeiten-philhist@unibas.ch
Course examinations/submission deadline for course-related performance assessments: Lecturer of the course

A make-up examination due to illness or postponement for valid reasons should be scheduled as soon as possible in the same semester. If a BA or MA examination cannot be made up in the current semester, it will be necessary to register again in the next semester. For courses, the details must be clarified with the lecturers responsible.

Study contract - Learning Contract

In principle, it is also possible to complete coursework outside of the regular study program on an individual basis. To do this, you need a study contract that regulates the conditions for acquiring and awarding the corresponding credits. The forms of student achievements in the context of extracurricular courses are defined in the regulations for the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs. In particular, these include supervised independent study, individual excursions, participation in research projects, individual internships, tutorial work and free seminar work. Study contracts must be agreed in advance between students and lecturers and can be recorded via the Self Services web application. The relevant teaching committee then approves the agreement, making it binding for all parties involved. Once the work has been completed, the study contract is assessed by the responsible lecturer.

Free elective area

The free elective area comprises 30 credit points in the Bachelor's degree program and up to 20 credit points in the Master's degree program. Students are free to choose the courses and modules with which they would like to acquire these credits from the courses offered by all faculties, although admission to certain courses may be subject to restrictions. As a rule, the free elective area serves to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge, specific, in particular methodological skills and foreign languages or to deepen one's own subject-related studies. For more information, please read the guidelines for the free elective area.

Credit points are allocated to the free elective area if they are earned in addition to the courses prescribed in the modules of your subject or degree program. When assigning modules, the number of credits in the free elective area is therefore calculated from the additional credits earned in the individual modules of the subjects or degree program and the credits listed under "Other courses". However, at least 150 credit points (out of a total of 180 CP) must be earned in the Bachelor's degree and at least 90 credit points (out of a total of 120 CP) in the Master's degree in the subjects or in the degree program.

Certifications

Certain thematically related coursework that is successfully completed in the free elective area of the Bachelor's and/or Master's degree program can be specifically identified in a separate certification.

Detailed information on the individual certifications can be found in the appendices to the guidelines for the free elective area.

Detailed information on the "Cultural Topographies" certification can be found here.
