Committees of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

In addition to the Faculty Assembly, the Faculty Board and the Dean's Office, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences mandates faculty commissions as governing bodies. These are divided into permanent and temporary committees.

Temporary committees

Search committees are temporary committees and are appointed by the Faculty Assembly when a professorship is reappointed or filled. They work on the basis of a written mandate and conclude their work with the preparation of a written report. Search committees evaluate the applications received, conduct hearings and make a list placement of usually three people. The appointment report is submitted to the Faculty Assembly for approval and then forwarded to the President's Board. The appointment is made by the University Council. In the case of assistant professors, the appointment is made by the President's Board.

Under certain circumstances, the faculty may appoint a finding committee directly in agreement with the President's Board. In the finding procedure, no calls for proposals are made for the position.

Composition

The composition of search committees is generally based on the provisions of the appointment regulations of the University of Basel, the Faculty regulations and the rules of procedure of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Ongoing search committees

See here.

Structural committees are temporary committees appointed by the Faculty Assembly as required. They prepare structural reports with regard to the approval of professorships as well as restructuring and shifts in focus within organizational units, which are submitted to the Faculty Board and the Faculty Assembly for approval and forwarding to the President's Board.

Composition

The composition of structural committees is generally based on the provisions for the representation of groups in the Faculty Assembly, as defined in the Faculty regulations.

The Committee for Equal Opportunities counsels the faculty and the departments with their boards on issues of equal opportunities and diversity. In doing so, it pays particular attention to the funding of young academics. It draws up the Faculty's equal opportunities plan for the attention of the Faculty's boards and is involved in its implementation. The committee coordinates its work with the university's Diversity Committee and the Diversity & Inclusion Office.

Composition

The Committee for Equal Opportunities is made up of the Equal Opportunity Commissioner, the Deputy Equal Opportunity Commissioner, both of whom are elected from among the members of Group I, as well as three other members of Group I. The five members of Group I come from different departments where possible. One member of Group I chairs the committees. Groups II to V are each represented by one representative.

The member of each search committee who is representative for equal opportunities is usually elected from among the members of the Equal Opportunities Committee.
